Elizabeth “Lizzie” Tran is a Kundiman fiction fellow, a Lambda fiction fellow, and the recipient of the Jeanne Cordova scholarship for Lambda fellows in 2017. She holds a B.A. from Rollins College, an M.Ed. from the University of California, San Diego, and an MFA in fiction from San Diego State University. Her book reviews, fiction, poetry, and essays have most recently appeared in Brickroad, Vien Dong, Little Saigon, Tayo Literary Magazine, Diacritics, and Foglifter. She is a high school and middle school English teacher, and a mother of two magical little boys. She lives on the shores of southern California, spending most of her days near the ocean she can’t breathe without.

When I started at Foglifter Press, back in 2016, I'd just left a formal education that rarely included queer and trans authors and was inflected with an undercurrent of suspicion toward any reference to identity, so couldn't imagine daring to write about my own queerness from fear that I'd be relegated to the "gay shelf." But Foglifter soon introduced me to a growing, vibrant community of LGBTQIA writers who wrote fearlessly and whom I read voraciously. Only when I took their lead and started letting in the queerness did my poems start to speak with my own voice. And, once I let the queerness in, I started being able to address other seemingly unsayable subjects, such as intergenerational trauma and healing, the constant, low-level terror of inhabiting a female body, and the violent racial legacy of whiteness in the American south. Foglifter showed me a better world was possible and made me feel brave enough to write toward it.”![]()
